Description of project: Introducing the ESCA 13 club in CIS

Purpose/Mission: Our purpose is to develop and implement campaigns and initiatives that help our school and community become more sustainable. Especially, to support the UN Sustainable development goals and are currently leading several campaigns within our school community.

Process:

Our club started 4 years ago with a group of five passionate grade 7 students who wanted to make a change to improve the way humans treat the environment. Originally we called ourselves Hand-to-Tree and began researching and educating ourselves about environmental issues. Last year, after attending the GIN Saigon Conference 2017, we were inspired by the speakers and other remarkable student participants to do more! We rebranded ourselves as ESCA13 to reflect our mission to support the UN Sustainable development goals and are currently leading several campaigns within our school community.

Reflection/next steps:

Last year, our club prepared a debate workshop about waste management for the Saigon GIN Conference 2017. At our school's annual GIN Oscars, we were nominated and won as the Best Workshop of the Year. This year we have kicked off the school year with a Plastax Campaign to reduce the use and consumption of plastic at our school’s cafe. This campaign gives students a discount if they purchase drinks using a reusable cup rather than single-use plastic. Furthermore we will be facilitating the collection of recyclable products at our school and ensure they are transferred to a recycling facility (RMIT or Wastewise). This year we are also implementing a Rooftop Garden to grow organic vegetables which will be given to our school’s cafeteria. This will reduce our carbon footprint and the use of pesticides while teaching students about where their food comes from and how to eat more sustainably. You can contact Holley Nguyen at holley.nguyen@students.cis.edu.vn.
